Things to do and places to go in Somerset
There is so much to see and things to do in this part of beautiful Somerset. The Fleet Air Arm Museum is well worth a visit. Here you'll find the largest collection of Naval aircraft anywhere in Europe as well as the first British built Concorde; you can even go on-board and visit the cockpit. Don't miss the Aircraft Carrier Experience where the museum meets theatre. You'll be 'transported' by helicopter to the replica flight deck of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal.
The Bath & West Showground is nearby with a host of shows throughout the year including the Royal Bath and West Show, the National Amateur Gardening Show and the Spring Festival of Food and Drink.
Nearby are Manor Farm Racing Stables, home to Paul Nicholls, one of the country's most successful National Hunt trainers and home to top class steeplechasers, Kauto Star and Denman.
There are beautiful National Trust properties nearby including the famous gardens at Stourhead, Montacute House, Lytes Cary Manor and Tintinhull Garden. There's also the stunning Hadspen Garden at Castle Cary.
Glastonbury is within easy reach as are the cathedral city of Wells, Castle Cary and Somerton, reputedly the 7th century Royal Capital of Wessex. There are also some stunning Somerset villages nearby, e.g. the Cadburys and Cadbury Castle. Sherborne and Shaftesbury are also within easy reach.
Cheddar Caves and Wookey Hole are both local if you fancy some dramatic subterranean exploring and Haynes Motor Museum is always a popular attraction with the boys, regardless of age. Clark's Village, the famous shopping village, is in nearby Street. Wincanton racecourse and Taunton racecourse are both a short drive away.
The brue is also an ideal location when visiting the private, independent boarding schools in the area, e.g. Millfield, Hazlegrove Preparatory School, Sherborne School for Boys, Sherborne School for Girls, Bruton School for Girls, Kings Bruton Boys School and Sexey's Bruton, the state boarding school, also in Bruton, and Chilton Cantelo School.
